Tablets and smartphones are driving demand for Intel’s data center server chips | VentureBeat
This reiterates what I have been evangelizing in my blog here. For every 120 tablets/mobile devices you need a server to handle what all the web based traffic they throw.
As long as the cloud and internet are around the data centers will continue to grow. These data centers don’t run laptops or tablets. They run big Intel based servers. Will AMD be a threat here? No. Intel just lets them survive to avoid the government shutting them down as a monopoly. What about ARM Holdings? Sure they have a low power chip but Intel’s chips are getting more power efficient and ultimately there will be a performance vs power used intersection to deal with.
For example what if an ARM chip runs on 50% the power of an Intel chip but has less than half the performance? In this example you would need more than 2 ARM chips to equal that of Intel’s processing power. So in the end ARM lower power chips in the data center save nothing. As long as Intel’s CPU power per watt consumed is ahead of ARM the power argument fails.
